Adding devices to your Autotask instance

After a customer purchases a product, you can create a database record in Autotask that tracks the item at the customer location. When you do so, you are installing it as a device Your Autotask instance may be configured to use one of the following terms instead: Asset, Configuration Item, Installed Asset, Installed Product.. You can do this manually, but given the sheer volume of devices most MSPs manage, this will most likely be an exception rather than the rule.

Here are the different ways you can add devices to your Autotask instance:

Manually adding devices

You can create new devices on the New Device page, but also by launching the Device Wizard from a quote or the Charges pages of contracts, projects, and tickets. Refer to Adding and editing devices and Installing a product as a device.

Importing Devices

Autotask provides an import template that allows you to import devices in bulk. You can also use it to update devices that were exported using the device export "in Import template format". Refer to Populating the Devices and Subscriptions import template.

Datto BCDR Integration

When you integrate with Datto BCDR, backup devices that generate alerts will be imported into Autotask. Refer to The Advanced Datto BCDR Integration.

Datto Network Manager Integration

When you integrate with Datto Network Manager, Datto Network Manager devices can be synced with Autotask to create devices and alert tickets. Refer to The Datto Network Manager Integration.

Remote monitoring and management options

The easiest way to get devices into Autotask is to import them from a Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) application.

Datto offers a fully integrated remote monitoring and management application, Datto RMM. We also support two types of third party vendor integrations.

Datto RMM

Autotask’s product offerings include the Datto RMM Integration, which allows you to integrate Datto RMM's remote monitoring and management features with the Autotask platform. For more information about the Datto RMM Integration, refer to The Advanced Datto RMM Integration.

Autotask integrates with Kaseya API

Autotask has an integration that uses the Kaseya API to access their Autotask instance and import the device data into Autotask. This is a "pull" process that is configured and launched from Autotask. For full information on how to import devices discovered by the Kaseya RMM application and associate the newly discovered devices with your Autotask organizations and contracts, refer to Running device discovery and Importing discovered devices into Autotask.

Vendor integrates with Autotask using Web Services API

A number of RMM vendors have used the Autotask Web Services API to integrate their alerts with the Autotask ticketing and to "push" device data into Autotask. This process is configured and launched from the RMM application. Vendors in this category are:

  • GFI Max
  • Continuum RMM
  • Naverisk

NOTE   New vendor integrations are constantly being added. For a complete list of RMM integrations, refer to Remote monitoring and management (RMM) integrations.
